An ad hook is the opening moment — the first line, image or few seconds — that stops the scroll and earns the rest of the ad a chance to land. In a feed built to be skipped, the hook is often the single biggest lever on whether an ad works at all.
It interrupts. Something unexpected breaks the scroll.
It creates a gap. Curiosity, tension or promise makes you want more.
It stays relevant. The intrigue connects to the actual message.
It hands off. Attention earned is passed to the offer.
Curiosity. An open loop the viewer wants closed.
Problem-first. Naming a pain the viewer feels.
Bold claim. A striking statement that demands attention.
Pattern break. A visual or line that defies the feed’s rhythm.
Attention is the gate. No hook, no chance for the rest.
It lifts everything. A stronger open raises the whole ad’s results.
It is testable. Hooks are among the fastest things to A/B.
Bait backfires. A hook that oversells erodes trust fast.
Relevance matters. A clever open unrelated to the offer wastes the click.
Format specificity. What hooks on one platform flops on another.
It fatigues. Even great hooks wear out with repetition.
